Their Stories
Syrian Refugee Children in Jordan
“Today I spent the day in the triage room doing art therapy with the children. There were so many little faces – markers and smiles everywhere. Their curiosity was endless. One asked in amazement, “There are Muslims in America? Wow!” Moments like these remind me how important connection and presence can be.
We often gift small things like markers or crayons, and the kids light up with gratitude. But today, two 6th grade girls touched me beyond words. They left, only to return with a gift for me – a single piece of gum. From children who have so little, that small gesture carried so much weight. I found myself fighting back tears.”
Layman, AidGaza
“This is Layman who is 11, her smile and love was infectious, mind you she is deaf. At the age of one she contracted bacterial meningitis, treatment was delayed and to be honest not possible in Gaza. She lost her hearing, regardless she was so happy to talk and joke with us (using sign language) for me bringing into perspective the ability to accept and make the best of what life brings our way.
She had webbed feet known as syndactyly, making it difficult to walk. So we operated on her releasing her fused toes and skin grafting her.
Before she went to sleep she asked if we could take a picture signing the “I love you” sign for all the donors and supporters.”
Ali Ahmed Al Hussain, ServeSmile
“Ali Ahmed Al Hussain was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate, and was unable to be breastfed or sleep correctly due to breathing problems. In 2015, a delicate 6-month old baby Ali held lovingly in his mother’s arms visited IMANA volunteers at the Khartoum Dental Teaching Hospital for an IMR sponsored cleft lip surgery. Baby Ali’s family brimmed with hope for their son to finally lead a normal life and not be subjected to stares from the society.
Our surgical team met with Baby Ali again in 2016 for his cleft palate surgery and, he walked into the hospital, as a healthy, cheerful 18 month old ready for yet another surgery to heal his cleft palate.
Ali’s mother, Fatima Ali expressed delightfully how her son has been reaching all his developmental milestones and is able to eat and sleep well.”
Yahya, ServeSyria
“This is Yahya. He has had incontinence for 8 years and uncontrollable anger and aggression. Daily. He had such sadness in his face when we first saw him. He looked exhausted and was slumped over while I talked to him. No light in his eyes at all. He was referred to me by one of the other doctors. His sacrum and pelvis were completely locked and felt like palpating concrete. His whole spine was so bad. He had bad scoliosis also and a twist in the pelvic bones. He also had a reversed cervical curve and muscle spasms in the neck. No wonder he was so angry. I adjusted him and asked him to come back again after 3 hours for a second adjustment. It was honestly like switching on a light. He was so happy and vibrant. After the second adjustment he jumped on to the table with excitement. Everything moved so much better. He said I feel so much better. Huge smile. So we were hugging him… This is our why. Yahya.”
