Volunteer - ServeYemen
Years of conflict and civil unrest in Yemen have triggered a severe humanitarian and health crisis, leading to acute shortages of medicines and medical supplies in hospitals and clinics - causing immense suffering for the population. In 2018, IMANA responded by procuring and delivering over $70 million worth of medicines and supplies, which were distributed to healthcare facilities in Aden, Sabah, and Taiz.
Ongoing instability has displaced large numbers of people, many of whom now live in refugee camps with limited access to food, clean water, or healthcare. Since November 2019, IMANA has sent volunteer teams to Aden to provide free primary care and medicines to the people of Yemen.
As of June 2025, our 10 medical missions have provided free primary care to 12,919 Patients

ServeYemen Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a visa to travel to Yemen?
Yes, you will need to obtain a visa before travel. We will explain the procedure and assist you with getting the visa. However, owing to multiple approval and security protocols in place we will need your passport to be mailed to our DC office well in advance of the date of travel. No other travel should be planned in the 30 days prior to your travel date for Yemen.
How do I get to Yemen?
There are two suggested travel options. You will take a commercial flight to the indicated transit city, either via Cairo, Egypt or Amman, Jordan, which we will indicate in consultation with our local partners. We will book your seats on a charter flight onwards to Aden, so that the whole IMANA team travels together.
What are the types of expenses involved in this mission?
Volunteers only pay for their air tickets to and from Yemen, including the charter flight. IMR arranges everything else – food, transportation and accommodation.
What are the arrangements for arrival, accommodation, food and local transportation?
Team members will be received and dropped at Aden airport by a representative of our local partners in Yemen. On arrival, they will be transferred to a 3-start hotel. Movement to and from the clinic will also be arranged. All meals will be taken care of, - breakfast & dinner at the hotel and a working lunch on-site.
What about the security situation?
IMANA keeps the safety and security of its volunteers uppermost when considering, planning and executing missions. We have had extensive discussions and exchanges with our local partners. The city of Aden and areas eastward are under the control of the UN-recognized government and humanitarian and medical NGOs are working there already, in a safe environment. The hotel has 24/7 security too.
Where is the clinic located?
The clinic is located about 45 minutes’ drive from the city of Aden; it’s close to the main refugee camps in the area.
What are the most common complaints to expect?
The most common complaints you will come across are hypertension, diabetes, cardiac issues, diarrhea and digestive issues, pregnancy, malnutrition, URTI/LRTI, fevers (malaria/typhoid/dengue), UTI, etc. Since it’s a conflict zone, there will be trauma and injury cases too.
What is the daily average number of patients expected there?
The expected number of patients is between 200 and 250 daily.
What facilities are available at the clinic? Is laboratory testing available?
Apart from stethoscopes, sphygmomanometer, weighing machines, gloves, masks etc, the clinic has EKG and ultrasonography facility. X-ray and laboratory facilities are available in the vicinity.
Is there a hospital nearby, to evacuate any acute cases?
Yes, there is a private hospital close-by.
How are medications dispensed?
IMR has drawn up a formulary of the medicines most likely needed, these will be purchased and made available at the clinic. There will be a pharmacist to dispense these as per the prescriptions.
How are language barriers addressed? Will there be translators?
Most of the clinic staff can understand and speak English. Translators will also be available.
